Teresa speaks at World Devepment Movement event on Kingsnorth
Teresa Murray, the Labour candidate for Rochester & Strood, has spoken on the BBC Politics Show and an event organised by the World Development Movement on the Kingsnorth development and climate change
Teresa highlighted at the event that climate change is a global issue and one that requires an internationalist approach. From the UN to the EU, she supported the position that the UK must be a strong voice in the climate change debate and not be a bit part player as the Tories would position. Climate Change is a global problem and requires cross-border action and the UK working with the EU to deliver regional solutions that can be pursued globally.
She re-iterated the close minded approach taken by the Conservative movement globally, which has denied that climate change has existed for decades, and have held policies that have benefited oil companies, but not improved fuel efficiency or our environment. Highlighting the position of the sister parties of the Conservative party; the Republican party in the USA and the Liberal Party in Australia; Teresa stated that the Conservative movement has always held a climate change rejectionist position and that Camerons PR re-positioning hides an undercurrent amongst its membership. A position highlighted in Medway by leading members of the local Conservative party, who have stated that Climate Change is nothing more then, 'Bogus science and exaggerated claims, supported with media hype'
Teresa emphasised that people in Medway require a centre-left government to act sensibly. Holding policies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions whilst investigating and consulting on new technology on existing energy generation mechanisms. Technology and innovation should be encouraged, and just as mankind has refind the car to make it more efficient in fuel consumption and emissions, so we should invest in other polluting industries. Teresa also stated that it is also the responsibility of the individual to adapt and be aware of the impact they have on the environment, and listed a number of ways this could be undertaken.
Teresa has met the Rt Hon. Ed Miliband, MP to express her support for government emphasis on renewable energy and on how to pursue the future energy requirements for the UK in a manner which fulfils the need to the public and our obligations to the International Community.
