Teresa Murray challenges David Cameron on Estuary Airport
Teresa Murray, Labour PPC for Rochester & Strood has written to David Cameron to articulate the Labour opposition to the Tory proposal to place an airport in North Kent. An estuary airport which will blight Grain and the Peninsula and which will lower house prices across Grain, Hoo, Chattenden and Cliffe. A policy which is not being challenged aggressively by Medway Conservatives.
The Tory London mayor, Boris Johnson, has called for a new airport in North Kent after concluding that Heathrow was 'a planning error.' The mayor is focused on the construction of a island airport and has appointed senior engineers and planners to examine the project. A policy soundly rejected by the Labour Government and local campaigners, who have opposed ambitions for airports in the region for the last decade.
In the letter to David Cameron, Teresa Murray stated that:
I have heard no condemnation on the proposal for an airport in North Kent from you as party leader, and I also doubt the voracity of influence that local Tories have on national policy. I am therefore calling on you to state that you oppose the Estuary airport and in doing so prevent Mayor Johnson from going ahead with his damaging plans which will harm people in Hoo, Grain, Chattenden and Cliffe.
The Conservative Party locally by trying to brush this issue under the blue carpet, and local Conservative PPCs have not made clear there position on any Airport in North Kent, including the Estuary Airport.
